To run fsckapfs -y on your Catalina APFS partition, you must access could also try accessing the disk another way, such as: booting into Catalina Internet Recovery (which also requires you to unmount the automatically mounted volumes). Booting from a Catalina USB installer. Booting your Mac in. Dec 11, 2004 This information excerpted from Apple’s “Using Disk Utility and fsck for file system maintenance in Mac OS X” document #106214.

In spite of the latest technology used in the majority of the hard disks, they are always prone to corruption. Mac, which is shipped with one of the finest hard drives, also stands a risk of getting corrupt. There are various reasons that can cause corruption in a hard disk. However, there are various options available on the Mac platform to repair the disk.

Note: Mac uses an HFS+ file system for their hard drives. It is an extended format of the HFS file format, which was used in earlier Mac computers and iPod music players.

One of the most simple and easy ways is to go to the Recovery mode and use the disk utility option.

But, there are times when the disk utility might not work or such an option might not be present at all. Such a situation remains very challenging for the user, as he would not be able to repair his corrupt Mac disk.

There are other options as well, which a user might try. A user can make use of the command line option to run various commands. Mac supports various tools including the file system check ‘fsck’ to repair a corrupt Mac Disk. Fsck is a very simple command supported by UNIX and UNIX-like operating system including Mac OS X. Primarily, the fsck command is used to check the consistency of the file system. However, there are various fsck tools, which can be used to repair the damaged file system. Generally, the command runs automatically at the boot time, but, the command can also be manually run in case there is any problem with the file system. It can easily run on the command line to perform an HFS disk repair for Mac. In order to repair a disk using an fsck command, you need to log in into the Mac using a single user mode. For this, you need to follow the below mentioned steps.

  1. Hold down the Command+S key to boot Mac into a single user mode.

Note: You can successfully do this, if you hold down the Command+S key as soon as you hear the boot chime.

  1. You will see some white text on black background. This ensures that you have logged in as a Single User Mode.
  2. A small box appears at the bottom of the screen. This is a command prompt where you need to type the command.
  3. Type fsck –fy command after the # sign.
  4. A message stating ‘The volume (name) appears to be OK’ appears after the repair process is complete.

Note: In case you receive any other message like ‘File system was modified’, then you should keep running the fsck –fy message until ‘The volume (name) appears to be OK’ message appears.

  1. In order to leave the Single User Mode, type ‘reboot’. This would boot the Mac normally into OS X.
  2. Once the Mac is up and running, you can verify the drive by making use of the Disk Utility and running the ‘verify’ command.

The above-mentioned steps are sufficient to repair the corrupt Mac disk. However, at times both the ‘fsck’ and Disk Utility might not work. In such a case it is quite possible that the hard disk drive has reached its last stage.

Note: It is always advised to backup all your valuable data to avoid any disaster. You can either take a manual backup or schedule the system to take a timely backup of your important data. For more information, you can visit this: http://www.stellarinfo.com/mac-software/volume-repair.php

The fsck command checks and repairs inconsistenciesin file systems. It has four options:

  • Checks only whether a file system can be mounted (fsck -m)

  • Interactively asks for confirmation before makingrepairs (fsck)

  • Assumes yes or no response for all repairs (fsck -y or fsck -n)

  • Noninteractively preens the file system, fixingall expected (innocuous) inconsistencies, but exiting when a serious problemis encountered (fsck -o p)

Generic fsck Command Syntax, Options, and Arguments

The fsck command has two components: a generic componentand a component specific to each type of file system. The generic commandsapply to most types of file systems, while the specific commands apply toonly one type of file system. You should always use the generic command, whichcalls the file system-specific command, as needed.

Usually, you must be superuser to run fsck. You canrun the fsck command without being superuser; but to makerepairs, you should unmount the file system and you must have read permissionfor the raw device file for the slice (a potential security hole).

The generic fsck command goes through /etc/vfstab to see what file systems to check. It runs the appropriatefile system-specific fsck command on each file system listed, except those excluded by an fsck pass number of - or 0 (UFS only).

The generic fsck command has the following syntax:

Option Type

Option

Description

Generic

-F

Specifies the file system type (type). If type is not specified on the command line, it is obtained from /etc/vfstab by matching an entry in that file with the specialdevice name specified. If no entry is found, the default local file systemtype specified in /etc/default/fs is used.

-V

Echoes the completed command line (verbose). The echoed line includes additionalinformation derived from /etc/vfstab. This option canbe used to verify and validate the command line. It does not execute the command.

-m

Performs a preliminary check only. It returns a code indicating the stateof the file system: 0 for 'clean' and 32 for 'dirty.' This option is used by the startup script /sbin/rcS to determine whether a file system needs to be checked.

-y or -Y or -n or -N

Runs the command automatically answering yes or no to all prompts.

c

Converts an old pre-SunOS 4.1 file system with staticallyallocated tables to new dynamically allocated tables. Static allocation imposesa hard maximum on table size, while dynamic allocation means space for tablescan be added as needed after the initial allocation. If the file system isin the new format, convert it to the old format, unless the table allocationexceeds the fixed maximum allowed in the old format. fscklists the direction of the conversion. In interactive mode, fsck prompts for confirmation before doing the conversion. When youuse the -o p option, the conversion is attempted without askingfor confirmation. This option is useful when you want to convert a numberof file systems at once. You can determine whether a file system is in theold or new format by running the fstyp command, and lookingat the first line displayed.

w

Checks only file systems that permit write access.

special

Specifies the mount point or raw device nameof one or more file systems. An entry for the mount point must exist in /etc/vfstab. If you omit the specialargument, entries in /etc/vfstab with a specified fsck device and a fsck pass number greater thanzero are checked. If preening (-o p) is in effect and morethan one entry has an fsck pass number greater than 1,file systems on different disks are checked in parallel.

Specific

This is a comma-separated list of options that follow the -ooption. Describes the options that are passed to the UFS-specific fsck command for interpretation.

p

Preens. Runs the command automatically in silent mode, correcting what it can, but exiting when it encounters a problem that requiresintervention. This option also enables parallel checking of UFS file systems.

b=blocknumber

Uses the alternative (redundant) superblock, located at the specified location. This option can be used to repair a badsuperblock. You can display a list of alternative superblocks by using the newfs -N command.
