Were

Elcar played Pete Thornton, the best friend and boss of MacGyver. Thornton was an administrative agent for the fictional Phoenix Foundation, a division of the United States Government.

Dana Elcar would develop glaucoma throughout the run of MacGyver. Elcar hasn’t done much in the years proceeding the show, mainly taking bit parts and some small stage theatre. He died in 2005 of Pneumonia.

The comic relief of the bunch, Bruce McGill played Macgyver’s friend Jack Dalton, a bush pilot. Dalton’s frequent “get rich quick” schemes would often land him in trouble, resulting in MacGyver having to bail him out.

Already an established actor in television and on film, McGill would go on to make guest appearances on hit shows like Home Improvement. McGill would also play a part in sci-fi show Babylon 5.

Japanese-American actor, Takai is most famous for his role as Dr. Sulu on Star Trek. He made an appearance on the fourth episode on season 2, “The Wish Child”. He played a member of the Chinese Mafia, who had taken captive the younger brother of MacGyver’s friend.

After years of playing the legendary Dr. Sulu on Star Trek, George has continued to make appearances in movies, TV shows, theatrical productions, voice acting, philanthropic work, and more. Nothing seems to slow this man down!

A relatively unknown and bit-part player, Robin Mossley would play Wilt Bozer, MacGyver’s neighbour at the Marina, in the first three seasons of MacGyver, from 1987 to 1990.

One of the more notable series he made an appearance on after MacGyver was The X-Files, appearing in three individual episodes as different characters from 1994 to 1996. Funnily enough, all the characters were Doctors.

Elyssa Davalos would join the cast of MacGyver in the third season as Phoenix Foundation agent Nikki Carpenter. Carpenter would be a foil for MacGyver, by disapproving and disagreeing with his methods.

First

Teri is known for her role as Lois Lane in ABC’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and more recently as Susan Mayer, her character on the Golden Globe and Emmy nominated series, Desperate Housewives.

This familiar face appeared in four episodes of MacGyver, playing Billy Colton. As you would expect, Cuba Gooding Jr. was an unknown during this period of his career, though nobody could have guessed what happened next.

The same year as his final episode of MacGyver, Cuba Gooding Jr. would star in the hit film Boyz n the Hood. Gooding Jr.’s film career took off, culminating in a Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars.

Veteran character actor James Hong has been acting since the 50s. His distinct voice has made him highly recognizable throughout his sixty-year career. Hong appeared on MacGyver in 1987 as the character Chu.

James Hong would return to a healthy and prolific career. Younger audiences will know him as a voice from the Kung Fu Panda series, but he’s known by generations of fans for many different projects.

Earl Dent appeared in four episodes throughout the series’ 6th season. Earl was an ex-convict who had straightened out his life and took part in prize-fights to provide for his daughter.

Funny enough, Dick’s role on MacGyver WAS a part of his retirement. Other than for the funny name, Butkus is much better known as two-time All-American football legend as a center and linebacker. He played for the Chicago Bears, and is widely regarded as one of the best defenses players in the history of the NFL.

Although Robert Donner would appear on MacGyver four times in his career between 1987 and 1990, he would only play Milt Bozer twice. You can probably guess who’s brother he plays.

Donner landed a recurring character role on the TV series Legend, as Mayor Chamberlain Brown. The lead actor of Legend? None other than MacGyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson.

Best known for her role in the wildly popular TV series Knight Rider, on which she played Bonnie Barstow, KITT’s mechanic. In addition to MacGyver, she made guest appearances throughout the 80’s on shows such as Starman, Murder She Wrote, Matlock, and Star Treck.

While her acting career was active, it was short-lived. Patricia retired from acting in 1991 and has gone on to spend the majority of her time working on wildlife and forest conservation projects and education.

Mayim Bialik appeared on MacGyver for three episodes as Lisa Woodman in 1989 and 1990. Bialik had also starred in TV series Malloy with the then-unknown Jennifer Aniston.

Bialik’s career would take off in the following years, having starred in the TV series Blossom from 1990 to 1995. A stint as a successful voice actor, she is now a series regular on sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

Murdoc is MacGyver’s long running arch nemesis throughout the series. He is a lethal assassin who works for the Homicide International Trust group (HIT, get it?) Murdoc is a master of disguise, an amazing pianist, and has a love for heavy artillery, such as bazookas, flamethrowers, and dynamite.

In real life, Des Barres is an accomplished rock musician. He has played alongside such greats as Duran Duran and The Sex-Pistols, and has a handful of solo albums. He continues to rock-on to this day.

Richard Dean Anderson had seen limited success on shows such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. MacGyver was Anderson’s big break, and although it got off to a slow start, it became a sleeper hit for network ABC.
